Fylgja

Fylgja (Old Norse for “companion”, plural fylgjur) in Norse mythology is a supernatural creature or animal that guides a person in regard to his fate and fortune. Fylgjur usually appear in the form of an animal during sleep, but according to the sagas, they can also appear while someone is awake. The type of animal would depend on the personality of the person involved. In a combative or rebellious person, the fylgja is most likely a wolf or a bear. In a calm and patient person, the fylgja is likely to take the form of a deer.
