Hermann Monument

The Hermannsdenkmal (“Hermann Monument”) is a monument near Detmold, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was built in 1838-1875 to a design by the architect and sculptor Ernst von Bandel. This colossal statue, with a total height of over 53 meters, refers to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and the story of Hermann (Arminius). Hermann is considered one of the first founders of a unified Germanic empire.
